The Israel and Gaza Crisis

We may not know when a crisis will occur, but when it does, Amnesty International’s crisis team is ready to collect evidence of human rights abuses that will help end the abuse and bring perpetrators to justice. Whether it’s the current conflict between Israel and Palestinian armed groups in Gaza, or the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria, we’re ready to help people at risk of human rights abuses and bring about long-lasting change.

The recent escalation in hostilities between Israel and Palestinian armed groups in Gaza has led to a humanitarian catastrophe, with a mounting civilian death toll. As the world watches in horror, Amnesty International has been hard at work. Our teams have been researching, monitoring, and documenting human rights abuses.

Our experts are carrying out painstaking verification of the findings in our Crisis Evidence Lab to expose crimes under international law. We’re speaking to survivors and eyewitnesses, analysing satellite imagery, and verifying photos and videos of the attacks.

“There can be no justification for continuing to block meaningful action by the UN Security Council to stop massive civilian bloodshed. The use of the veto is morally indefensible and a dereliction of the US duty to prevent atrocity crimes and uphold international law.

“On top of blocking the adoption of a ceasefire that would end mass humanitarian suffering in Gaza, aid the return of hostages, and calm tension multiplying in the region, the US continues to transfer US-made munitions to the government of Israel that contribute to the of entire families.

“As the only state to veto, it’s clear the US stands isolated from much of world, and a large portion of its own population. It is displaying a complete absence of global leadership and failing to understand the historical significance of the moment.

“The US purports to champion a rules-based international order, however its brazen double standards and disregard for international law has repercussions that extend well beyond the horrific catastrophe in Gaza, weakening the already enfeebled international system for protecting civilians in conflict.

Around the world, pressure is rising to hold those responsible for human rights violations to account. As a global community, we are calling on all UN Members States to immediately halt the transfer of weapons, parts, and ammunition to Israel and Palestinian armed groups that are fueling the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, we continue to reiterate the call for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire by all parties.

Last month, Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand's Executive Director, Shaun Greaves, wrote an article for the Otago Daily Times about the need for stronger action from the New Zealand Government. Along with a number of partner organisations, we have called on the Government to do more to ensure that humanitarian aid can reach those in desperate need.

22 years of writing for rights

Write for Rights is the world’s biggest human rights event. It brings millions of people together as one to take action and stand up for freedom, justice and equality.

Every year in the lead up to World Human Rights Day (10 December), Amnesty supporters and activists from 170 countries take action – writing letters, signing petitions, and much more – telling governments to challenge injustice and right wrongs.

People power works

Real positive change takes place because of those actions: people under attack are protected, people wrongfully imprisoned are released, torturers are brought to justice and people in prison are treated more humanely.

We run Write for Rights every year because it works – your words have freed people from human rights abuses and changed lives.
