A VISION FOR A BETTER CLIMATE

“My vision for humanity is pretty simple – here
we are, all of us, sitting on this rock, flying
through space. Papatūānuku. It’s our home. And
it’s our responsibility to look after that. And we
need to look after each other.”

"We have to take care of our planet so that we
can keep enjoying it forever.
Everyone should have the right to live a safe and
healthy life.
Everyone should experience what it’s like to
have clean air and water."

Climate action upholds human rights.

Shaping a future that is fair and just for all. Climate action must upholds human rights by recognising that a healthy environment is essential for the well-being and enjoyment of all individuals.

Access to clean air, water, and a stable climate are fundamental human rights. By taking decisive action to address the climate crisis, we shape a future that is fair and just for all, where the rights and dignity of every person are respected and protected.

Governments and corporations are accountable for their harm. Creating a world where our planets well-being triumphs over profit.

Governments and corporations have an obligation to protect human rights, including from harms caused by climate change.

By holding governments and corporations accountable, we pave the way for a future where economic activities are aligned with ecological sustainability, ensuring a fair and just world for both present and future generations.

The voices of environmental defenders are amplified and protected. Enabling them to advocate for climate justice without fear.

The voices of environmental defenders are vital in advocating for climate justice, yet they often face intimidation, harassment, and violence. To achieve a fair and just future, it is imperative to protect and amplify the voices of these courageous individuals.

By empowering environmental defenders, we create a space where they can fearlessly advocate for climate justice, without any hindrances. Their unwavering dedication and activism contribute to building a future that respects human rights and champions the cause of sustainability.

Vulnerable communities are safeguarded from climate-related disasters.

At a national level, those in less wealthy countries, especially low-lying, small island states and less developed countries, will be and are already among those worst affected by climate change. Often it’s those who contribute the least to climate change that are most impacted.

Vulnerable communities must be safeguarded from climate-related disasters, and those disproportionately affected by climate change must receive the support and resources they need to adapt and thrive.

Climate change is one of the greatest human rights challenges of our time. But, we have brighter vision for the future. A vision that needs long-term support from people like you.

Your regular donation can help:

  • Advocate for the development of policies and practices that prioritise human rights.
  • Push for accountability from states and companies which fail to act on climate change.
  • Support groups and indigenous communities that advocate for climate justice.
  • Create more human rights education helps to raise awareness of the ways in which climate change affects fundamental human rights such as the right to life, health, food, water, and shelter.
  • Support and protect environmental rights defenders who work to save their land against climate impacts, extraction of fossil fuels and deforestation.
  • Protect freedom of assembly and the right to protest, so communities can hold authorities
and companies accountable for environmental damage.

The brighter future we’re building is dependent on restoring the planet for future generations to
enjoy. Let’s work together to defend the future for our whānau.

An end to the imprisonment and death sentences of individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, ensuring freedom and protection for all.

Despite recent wins for equality around the world, in many countries the right to express our sexuality still puts people and massive risk. In 70 countries it’s illegal to be openly gay and In 10 countries consensual sex between same-sex partners can be punished with death.

People should be free to be themselves, and be treated with respect and dignity regardless of who they love or how they identify.

A world where LGBTQIA individuals are respected and celebrated for their authentic selves, free from discrimination and prejudice.

For those who do not live with a daily immediate risk to their life, discrimination on the basis of one’s sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression and sex characteristics, can have a devastating effect on physical, mental and emotional well-being for those forced to endure it.

Discrimination goes beyond being criminally prosecuted for being an LGBTI person and can include limited access to healthcare, difficulty in securing employment, bullying or harassment in the workplace and much more.

Freedom of expression and assembly for rainbow communities.

Pride marches around the world are regularly banned or violently suppressed by state authorities. In countries where same-sex conduct is criminalized, people attending Pride marches put themselves at risk of getting arrested.

By working together and ensuring that everyone – including the most discriminated against – can participate in protests equally and without fear of violence, we can create a more just and equal world.

Alongside our dedicated activists around the world, Amnesty works for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex peoples’ rights. Through our research, activism and campaigning we help ensure that all people can live in dignity, safety and freedom.

The causes of forced displacement, like human rights abuses, and the climate crisis, are addressed.

By advocating for human rights, holding perpetrators accountable for abuses, and addressing the impacts of the climate crisis, we strive to create a world where individuals are not forcibly displaced from their communities and can live in safety and dignity.

People embrace diversity, creating inclusive communities where refugees are welcomed and respected.

By challenging xenophobia, discrimination, and prejudice, we strive to create a society where refugees are embraced as valuable members and their contributions are recognized and celebrated.

Through education, awareness-raising, and advocating for inclusive policies, we can create communities that thrive on diversity and ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background, are treated with dignity and respect.

People fleeing violence have safe shelter, food and water, the opportunity to work, access to education and legal assistance.

By addressing the immediate needs of refugees and promoting their long-term well-being, we strive to create a world where all individuals, regardless of their refugee status, can live in dignity and realize their full potential.

The arbitrary and indefinite detention of refugees and asylum seekers is abolished.

We have a responsibility to protect the rights of people who have been forced to flee war and persecution, who are often quite vulnerable, but have so much to offer our country. Seeking asylum is a human right and countries should welcome people in need, rather than detaining them.

Amnesty works tirelessly to advocate for refugees and asylum seekers, including championing solutions to increase our humanitarian intake, end offshore detention and bring refugees to safety.

The abuse of refugee rights is an ongoing injustice we must challenge.

Your regular donation can help:

  • Continue our work to make sure governments honour their shared responsibility to protect the rights of refugees, asylum seekers and migrants.
  • Advocate to ensure that the rights and needs of refugees are meet.
  • Research teams collect evidence and testimonials from refugees.
  • Continue campaigning to bring the people in Australia's offshore detention centres to safety.
  • Assemble campaigning teams to advocate for individuals at risk.

With your help, Amnesty can continue to be relentless in our fight for fair treatment of refugees looking to Australia for help.
