AUCKLAND WRITERS FESTIVAL AND
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL

TOGETHER FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION

Did you know events like STREETSIDE are only possible when we empower freedom of expression?

Did you know that in some countries, you can be imprisoned for speaking and writing about your identity?

Did you know that creative writing can help build a world where human rights are protected?

The Auckland Writers Festival gathers over 220 of the world’s best writers and thinkers to celebrate the world of books and ideas. The Festival is driven by the desire to spark ideas, to get us talking and to give us a time and place to engage with the world.

Amnesty International gathers people all around the world to celebrate the best of humanity. The Amnesty movement is driven by ideas, shared stories and the desire to engage with each other. When we do, we build the kind of societies that everyone wants to be a part of.

It's a natural fit.

STREETSIDE is just the kind of energetic, fun celebration of words and creativity that brings people together in a spirit of respect and exploration.

We're fortunate that we can have a STREETSIDE here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Because freedom of expression can't be taken for granted in many places around the world.

These are turbulent times. It can be risky to spark ideas, to challenge norms, to express yourself. Far too many people are imprisoned, tortured or disappeared for doing just that.

But we can use our words and our freedom to help. We can protect and promote human rights, push back against the world’s bullies and stand with humanity. Together we are powerful.

Together we can make respect, connection, compassion and social justice the norm.

Scroll on to find out more about human rights and all the ways you can get involved.

And join us in developing a clear vision of a positive future. Tell us about your aspirations for humankind in 2025. What do you wish for Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond?

Stand with us by answering a single question below: What's your vision for humanity?

We're going to share these hopes (just your words and your first name, no other identifying info) online, plus we're working on some exciting colabs where we hope to get them out in more public places.

Pencils

Write for Rights brings millions of compassionate people together around the world – because when we challenge injustice, we change lives.

Write for Rights is the world’s biggest human rights event. It’s a moment when Amnesty International’s movement of ten million comes together as one to take action and stand up for freedom, justice and equality.

People writing letters

Amnesty International's Rapid Response Network has a simple concept – Take Action, Change a Life.

Rapid Response appeals ask our community of advocates to flood the mailboxes, inboxes, phones and social media of authorities when someone is in imminent danger of human rights violations. You choose whether you want to take action on a daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis.

Girl holding candle

In honour of Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand's 60th birthday, are you able to consider a major gift of $5,000 or over, becoming a transformational force for good? If so, you will become an Amnesty Candle – a powerful light shining in the darkness. A ray of hope.

There are already 20 Amnesty Candle donors who give $5,000 or over annually.
